Why I Made My Own Board Butter (And Why It Matters)

If you own a cutting board, charcuterie board, or any wooden kitchen piece, you have probably heard someone say you should “oil it once in a while.” The problem is most people do not know what to use, how often to use it, or why it even matters.

That is why I started making my own board butter for Splintered Board. It is simple, safe, and made to keep your wood looking good for years.

What Is Board Butter

Board butter is a mix of mineral oil and waxes. The oil soaks into the wood to keep it from drying out. The wax sits on top to protect it from water and daily use. Together they keep your board from cracking, splitting, or looking dull.

Why I Make My Own

I got tired of store products that were overpriced or packed with stuff you do not need. Making my own lets me control every ingredient. No weird chemicals. No heavy scents. Just a clean mix that does exactly what it is supposed to do.

I use three things
mineralk oil
beeswax
carnauba wax
A little vitamin E keeps it fresh. That is it.

Why It Matters for Your Boards

Wood is like skin. If it dries out, it cracks. If it is taken care of, it lasts. A board that is oiled and waxed regularly will outlast any board that is ignored.

Good board butter helps your board
stay smooth
repel water
look rich and fresh
avoid deep cracks and warping
This is the difference between a board that looks great for years and one that looks rough after a few months.

How Often Should You Use It

If your board looks dry or feels rough, it is time. For most people, once a month is perfect. If you cook a lot, maybe twice a month. A thin coat is all you need.

Why Splintered Board Butter

Every tin is made in small batches. I use it on every board I make before it leaves the shop. It is food safe. It is simple. And it works.

And for the record
Not for consumption.
Do not eat it.
Please.

Final Thought

If you want your board to last, board butter is not optional. It is part of taking care of something made from real wood. Whether you have an SB board or not, give your boards a little love. They will thank you for it.
